The Clan Dynamics and Political Chessboard in Kajiado County

Estimated read time 3 min read

In the intricate tapestry of Kajiado County politics, a subtle but powerful force has begun to shape the narrative – the influence of clans. Beyond the realm of party lines, political heavyweights find themselves realigning based on age-old clan affiliations, introducing a new dynamic to the county’s political theater.

Traditionally known for transcending party loyalty, Kajiado residents have established a reputation for electing leaders based on merit rather than political affiliations. However, a rising undercurrent of clan politics is reshaping this narrative, ushering in a new era marked by subclanism and the emergence of spokespersons for each major clan.

At the forefront are the Orokiteng and Odomongi clans, each further fragmented into numerous sub-clans. Governor Lenku, as the Maa spokesperson and Kajiado’s governor, naturally assumes the role of the Orokiteng spokesperson. Conversely, Katoo Ole Metito, the Statehouse controller, steps into the position of the Odomongi spokesperson. Within Odomongi, internal divisions have given rise to two major sub-clans, namely ilmolelian and ilmokesen, each vying for its own spokesperson.

While the ilmolelian clan consolidates its representation, the ilmokesen clan finds itself in a vacuum, desperately seeking a spokesperson. This vacuum, if left unaddressed, may foster division and discord as the county hurtles towards the 2027 political landscape.

Enter Nkedianye, a figure perceived as the natural choice for the ilmokesen spokesperson role. However, doubts linger as Memusi Ole Kanchori, another prominent figure, emerges as a contender. Public sentiment seemingly favors Nkedianye, but skepticism remains, fueled by his past electoral setbacks. The dynamic has been further complicated by Nkedianye’s apparent struggle for trust among leaders from Odomongi.

The recent shift of both leaders to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) adds an intriguing layer to the unfolding drama. Memusi’s defection to UDA was met with a presidential audience and a cascade of benefits for his constituency, while Nkedianye’s move lacked the same grandeur. The subsequent ceremony turned into an unexpected embarrassment, lacking the presence of national UDA leaders. The Dr. seem not to have taken this easy especially by using a term “twende polepoole” which loosely translate tolet’s be keen and watchful as we navigate the intriguing twists and turns that lie ahead.

The intricate dance of clans in Kajiado County politics has led political analysts to dub this unfolding saga as a strategic plot. The aim seems clear – to elevate Memusi’s profile who already have an advantage of fame and numbers, potentially eclipsing Nkedianye’s fame and influence.
